Masks can purify and moisturize dry skin

By Al Varela

A reader writes: For quite sometime I have been bothered by breakouts on my face. A friend told me that using a cleansing mask would solve my problems. Please tell me more about masks and how they can help me.

Masks alone will not stop your breakout problem. You need to develop a routine for cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin. A facial mask, once a week, should be a supplement to your routine. A mask is a treatment product that is left on the skin for a period of time and can come in many different forms for cleansing and moisturizing.

For dry skin, you will need a hydrating, creamy formula where the skin will benefit from ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vegetable proteins, amino acids and essential fatty acids.

Dry skin can be very sensitive and the ingredients in a hydrating mask can also contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as chamomile and sea algae.

Oily skins can benefit from deep cleansing masks that help shift impurities and unclog pores. Clay, mud, wheat starches, charcoal and titanium dioxide are ingredients used in these masks to help soak up oil and draw out impurities. They also increase the drying properties of oily skin.

People with normal skins need a gentle cleansing formula that helps to remove dead skin cells and also helps clean everyday pollution and smoke that can accumulate with time.

Gel-based masks usually work for oily or sensitive skins, while cream masks are more effective for dryer skin types. These types of formulation bases aid the mask to work to its full potential.

Do not abuse or overuse masks as this can upset the normal balance of your skin and worsen any problems you have. Be sure to avoid placing the mask too close to the eye area unless the mask is specifically made for the eyes.

Always place the mask on the skin in a uniform layer and never leave it on long enough to dry. Be sure to always read and follow the directions for the mask carefully to prevent any adverse problems.

A mask once a week or maybe every couple of weeks is sufficient. Used as a once in a while treat, masks can make your skin look and feel healthier.
